Is your attic insulation low? Do you have high energy bills? How much pest poop is hiding in your attic? Are you irritated by uncomfortable rooms? Is your home making you sick?
Stellrr can transform your home into a comfortable, energy-efficient, and healthy place for your family to enjoy life! The first step is to…
Uncover the Hidden Problems Impacting Your $$$ and Health
Is your home more than 10 years old? Aging insulation loses its effective R-value when it gets dirty, moved around, or compressed. Fiberglass or cellulose insulation over 10 years old is likely only 20-40% of today’s R-49 code minimum.
Ignoring attic insulation problems is a costly mistake. Sub-par attics require more expensive: HVAC units, pest control, replacement windows, solar panels, and much more! Check this out…
The 4 Major Attic PROBLEMS
1. Vented Attics Add A New Layer Of Toxins To Your Home Each Year
2. Insect & Pest Damage Hides In The "Carpet Of The Attic"
3. Your Attic Is Like The Inside Of Your Car Sitting In The Summer Sun
4. Air You Paid To Cool Is Re-Heated In The Ductwork & Leaks Into The Attic
Popular Attic Upgrades
Is it worth getting these upgrades? It is when you know Stellrr backs our solutions with our Smart Money Guarantee. What does that mean? It means you will save the amount it costs to retrofit your home in less than ten years, OR WE REFUND YOU THE DIFFERENCE! That is Stellrr’s Smart Money Guarantee.

Details Matter When Cleansing
The Ignition Barrier Intumescent Coating is installed to create a 5-minute fire barrier as IECC requires attics larger than 36″ tall and 30 sq ft in space. These are high quality insulation products.
Since the HVAC unit won’t run as much, and won’t pull as much humidity out of the air, we will install our SaniDry whole home dehumidifier. This adds more “load” onto the HVAC system while also mechanically managing the moisture in your home with a stand alone system.
At last mold will never stand a chance at growing in your attic. The allergens will be blocked from entering your attic. You have a happy, healthy space for you and your family. And you’ll get the side benefit of lower energy bills.

Questions on Attic Insulation Austin
According to statistics from EPA's Energy Star Association, energy bills can be cut by 30-50% with a properly sealed building envelope versus a vented one. The initial cost of the spray insulation should be seen as an investment as it will pay for itself over time.
Absolutely! The biggest expense when converting an attic would be to install closed cell foam instead of open cell foam. In northern climate zones closed cell is required. However, in central Texas open cell is the primary foam. Using open cell drops the cost of foam by 1/2. Other than this item, what we include in our proposals is what is required to do the job right. And it is best to do it right, or not do it at all.
The price depends on the size of the attic, scope of work required to do it right, and the difficulty of the work. We have fixed pricing and do not charge more for nicer parts of town. Everyone gets the same rate. With that said, you can see the 3 main project types pricing above.
Many people ask “How much attic insulation is enough? How much R-value should I have?”
Most attic insulation is deficient. Homes are under-insulated according to the current IECC and City of Austin building code requirements. Why?
Before the year 2000, there were NO energy codes that required minimums for insulation.
Plus, even a new home can be uncomfortable or have damaged insulation. Questions? Call (512) 710-2839
The problem is often bigger than simply the amount of insulation in the attic.
What is an easy way to know if you need new insulation? If you can see the joists in your attic floor, then your own home is under-insulated.
You want to have at least an R-49 (COA code went from R-38 up to R-49 in 2021). BUT, many homes are still uncomfortable even with the proper R-value on the floor.
We believe attics must be air sealed, before insulating. So our process is very different than most contractors who just “Put Lipstick on a Pig” and don’t fix comfort or energy savings problems.
- Here Stellrr removed the soiled attic insulation near Austin.
- Air sealed the penetrations and leaky cracks.
- Encapsulated the HVAC system air ducts to ensure your air conditioning is delivered at the perfect temperature.
- Lastly, blew in Energy Star highly recommended level of R-60 All Boric Cellulose attic insulation. It was a great job!
Short answer is, the entire attic floor should be covered with insulation. If you are using spray polyurethane foam, then we highly recommend the attic ceiling (roof deck) be sprayed. Foam does great work as a radiant barrier. If you have vaulted ceilings, or multiple ceiling heights, then insulation must be stuck to the back of the drywall. We often see hot spots in one room where there is a raised ceiling. Fiberglass batt insulation is often stuffed up against the raised ceiling wall, and falls down (becoming useless) over time.
Batt insulation in attics is a problem building assembly.
It is more costly to remove insulation than it is to simply add more on top of the existing insulation. Before learning how to insulate an attic in Texas, you need to know about removal. Here are a few reasons why you would want existing radiant barrier and insulation removed:
- Is someone living in the building allergic to the insulation material installed?
- Does someone in the building have a sensitivity to outside allergens coming into the Austin home via the vented envelope?
- Is there excessive dust, dust mites, and other things filtering into the home via the attic?
- Have animals nested and left feces behind that is venting into your air space?
- Do you have mold or too much moisture in your attic?
- Do you have asbestos in your old attic insulation?
When you remove the insulation, you can hire the insulation installation crew to air-seal the attic floor if you are replacing the insulation with another blown or batt material. If you are creating a closed envelope with closed cell foam or open cell foam, you can then remove nasty old insulation and create storage space across your attic. Questions? Call (512) 710-2839!
The bottom line is that, insulating an attic, without air sealing is Mal-practice!
The cost ranges widely depending on whether you have fiberglass, cellulose or spray foam installed. However, to FIX IT RIGHT, we are often seeing the costbeing $7,000 – $14,000 per 1,000 sq ft of attic.
Now if you want to “Put Lipstick On A Pig” and not fix anything, the material costs of blowing more attic insulation can be as low as $2,000 per 1,000 sq ft of attic. If you want to save money on air conditioning and cooling costs with home insulation, do it right. It’s not as simple as adding a radiant barrier. Get a free estimate from Stellrr. We will look at your attic and crawlspace insulation.
Fiberglass and cellulose insulation each offer unique advantages. Fiberglass is a lightweight material made from spun glass fibers, known for its durability and moisture resistance. It is often more affordable and widely available. On the other hand, cellulose is an eco-friendly option made from recycled paper treated for fire and pest resistance. It provides excellent soundproofing and superior performance in irregular spaces due to its ability to settle into gaps. However, cellulose can be more susceptible to moisture and may require additional treatments in humid areas.
Sure. You could. But each person who has tried DIYing it, has told us what a mistake it was. It is so hot in attics that it takes weeks for our men to acclimate to it. Plus you really need the right equipment. We use 23 horse power vacuums and blow it into large dumpsters. People who DIY have used shop vacs. The difference is 1,000 sq ft per day of removal versus 100 sq ft per day DIY.

Since spray foam insulation is applied to the roof-decking and rafters on the attic ceiling, the R-value required is only R-25 of open cell foam. Why? For starters, foam is a significantly better performing product, and it is a barrier for all 3-types of heat transfer. Plus, with spray insulation, you don’t need an extra radiant barrier because foam is a radiant barrier.
Why does foam only require R-25 to meet code requirements when the City of Austin requires R-49 for blown insulation? The difference is this: R-49 is the prescriptive code. Meaning, how the code was written. But, the City recognizes that R-25 preforms equal to or better than the R-49 prescribed code. Prescriptive vs Performance code.
For Austin’s warm climate, attic insulation needs to prioritize thermal efficiency and moisture control. Spray foam insulation is a top choice due to its high R-value and ability to seal air leaks, keeping homes cooler during hot summers. Fiberglass insulation is also effective and budget-friendly, especially when paired with radiant barriers to reflect heat. For eco-conscious homeowners, cellulose insulation can provide excellent coverage and soundproofing but may need added moisture protection in the area’s humid months.
The best time to have planted a tree was 30 years ago. The next best time is today. Likewise, it would be great to have fixed the problem building assembly in your attic when it was cheaper. But attic insulation costs are only going up.
You can continue to pay to waste energy and be uncomfortable. Or you can fix things and be saving money down the road. Plus, more importantly, you will be creating a healthier, safer environment for your family to have the best experience.
The longer you wait, the more expensive it will be to fix your attic insulation.
Your best bet is to have a professional give you an estimate. Most of the time with Austin insulation, it is more expensive to install it yourself than it is to hire a pro to help lower your electric bill. Very counterintuitive. Hire Stellrr. We are extremely professional. Will do an excellent job. You will have a great experience. We are great roof insulation installers.
Fiberglass insulation is a traditional and cost-effective choice, available in batts or loose-fill forms. It is non-combustible and easy to install but may require a vapor barrier to combat moisture. Spray foam insulation offers an advanced solution, expanding to fill cracks and creating an airtight seal. It provides excellent thermal resistance (R-value), reduces air infiltration, and acts as a moisture barrier. However, spray foam is typically more expensive and requires professional installation.
Look for a service with experienced professionals offering various insulation options like fiberglass, cellulose, or spray foam. Prioritize companies focusing on energy-efficient solutions tailored to your home and local climate. Check reviews to ensure a strong reputation and reliability. Local expertise is key for addressing specific environmental challenges in your area.
